Microsoft (MSFT) added to its already-extensive portfolio of patents Monday with a purchase of more than 800 patents from struggling AOL (AOL) to the tune of $1.1 billion, Investor's Business Daily reported.
The patents cover a host of online technologies in the advertising, search and multimedia arenas among others.
AOL continues to hold more than 300 patents and patent applications covering the technologies it considers core and strategic.
Microsoft will license its newly purchased patents to AOL in return for AOL licensing its remaining patents to the technology giant. Social-networking firm Facebook (FB) is likely to benefit from the deal.
