Former Enumclaw FB coach Don Bartel hired as Skyline's defensive coordinator - The Seattle Times (blog)

When Skyline football coach Mat Taylor was in Phoenix for the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl, he had the chance to talk coaches from several prominent high-school football teams.

They discussed differences between programs in different parts of the country. Taylor, who was the offensive coordinator at the event, was shocked to hear the coaches talk about the number of assistants they had who also worked at the school.

With as many as seven coaches in the building every day, the head coaches were able to delegate duties.

"I was jealous of how many people they had in building, to be around the kids and to be able to just talk to kids on a daily basis," Taylor said.

While Taylor isn't able to bring that many in-building assistants to Skyline, he was able to add one, hiring former Enumclaw coach Don Bartel as the Spartans' defensive coordinator.

Bartel takes over for Steve Chmiel, who coached Skyline's defense for three seasons.

"It wasn't an easy decision to begin with, because coach Chmiel had done a great job for us for three years," Taylor said. "The decision was not an Xs and Os problem or anything like that. The main thing was coaching in building. It's just nice to get people who can be in building with you."

Bartel, who resigned in March, had a 16-22 record over four seasons at Enumclaw.

Taylor had his four captains -- Max Browne, Peyton Pelluer, Nic Sblendorio and Trevor Barney -- conduct the interview with Bartel. Taylor observed, but didn't ask questions.

"He's as fiery a coach as I've ever been around," Taylor said. "The energy that he'll bring, it's just awesome."

In addition to helping out with some of the day-to-day coaching duties, Taylor said Bartel will, "bring an identity to Skyline as a defensive team, not just an offensive team."
