Can Facebook 'Likes' Predict 'American Idol' Winner? - Wall Street Journal (blog)
Apr 13th 2012, 20:02

By Stephanie Krikorian

Last season, many small companies were using social media apps and sites to track and predict who would win "American Idol." There were ups and downs based on positive and negative tweets and the predictions ranged from who would be eliminated to who would win the week. They were hit and miss, to say the least.

There was one consistent forecast, however, and that was Facebook "Likes" — Scotty McCreery had the most for weeks and weeks heading into the finale and lo and behold…won the title.

So, using the Facebook "Likes" to measure…well…read the numbers, we'll see what happens in the coming weeks. These numbers change every minute, so we rounded them out to give you an idea.

Colton Dixon has more than 104,000 "Likes" on his main fan page and has many auxiliary fan pages with big numbers as well. He has almost 190,000 Twitter followers.

Jessica, who was shockingly eliminated, then expectedly saved, is flush with Twitter followers, approaching 158,000 of them, and has only around 97,000 "Likes" on Facebook.

Phillip Phillips has 72,000-plus Facebook "Likes" and more than 165,000 Twitter followers.

The next closest is Skylar Laine, with 33,000 "Likes" and 70,000 Twitter followers.

After that, it's pretty much a dead-heat: Hollie Cavanagh, Joshua Ledet and Elise Testone all have "Likes" in the 25,000 to 28,000 range and Twitter followers in the 50,000-plus range.

Well, if the numbers mean anything, the final three will be Colton, Phillip and Jessica, and Hollie, who seems to be getting cold shoulder from the judges, might just hang in there longer than they've been insinuating she should.

Do you think the low "Likes" mean anything this season given what happened to Jessica last night?
