KARACHI: The campus of Nazeer Hussain University was inaugurated amid a vibrant show of fireworks in Federal B Area on Friday.
The university has been named after the late father of Muttahida Qaumi Movement's chief, Altaf Hussain and has been funded for by the party's London-based welfare organisation, Society for Unwell and Needy (SUN).
The campus has 40 classrooms, 10 laboratories and an auditorium, with the administrative block. The first batch will have 1,000 students and will begin from January 2012. Courses are offered in three faculties, architecture, engineering and business studies.
While addressing the audience at the ceremony, Tariq Mir, the university's president, said that the university is spread over 15 acres and will expand to accommodate 4,000 more students. The university charter includes the establishment of 19 faculties, including a medical college.
Mir, who is also the founder and the managing trustee of SUN, asserted that the university will compete with international universities of high standards and equip the students for better employment. "The degree programmes will be affiliated with foreign universities in the United Kingdom and United States," he said. "Pakistani students might not want to study abroad after this project."
The former city mayor, Mustafa Kamal, also spoke on the occasion. He said that this university was a vision of the party chief, Altaf Hussain. It has now become a reality.
