CORAL GABLES — Already struggling with manpower issues, the Miami Hurricanes have lost two starters for the rest of spring practice because of injuries.
Senior fullback C.J. Holton and junior defensive end Shayon Green were both injured in last Friday night's scrimmage in Fort Myers. UM did not release the specific injuries sustained by the two players, but Holton appeared to hurt his right ankle after a rushing attempt.
Coach Al Golden indicated that neither injury is serious, but would not say if they would require surgery.
"The reality is that they will be back rather quickly," Golden said this week . "It's not something where we'll be wondering in August whether they're coming back or not."
Green has battled injuries his entire career and has played in only six games in three seasons.
Golden said that Green was "arguably" the Hurricanes' most improved player on defense this spring. He's also one of the older players on a defensive line heavy on youth.
"I know it's a setback for him, but he's so tough," Golden said. "I think he'll overcome this. This is not a major deal."
Holton was promoted to starting fullback last week after former starter Maurice Hagans was hurt in UM's first scrimmage March 24. With Hagans and Holton sidelined, Golden did not say who would take snaps at fullback although Mike James, the starting tailback, is listed on the depth chart as the No. 2 fullback.
UM has now lost three starters to injuries in two weeks. Starting left guard Jonathan Feliciano hurt his right knee during the March 24 scrimmage.
Like Green and Holton, Feliciano won't participate in the rest of spring practice which ends April 14 at Sun Life Stadium with the spring game.
