Facebook: Video apps on Timeline are taking off - ZDNet (blog)
Apr 4th 2012, 22:57

Facebook today shared some early results for some of the old and new Open Graph apps the company launched for its new Timeline profile. This time, video is being emphasized.

Facebook says video apps are already seeing increased growth and engagement by making it easier for users to share and discover videos on the social network and their mobile devices. Early results show that as video clips go viral, so do the video apps and websites integrated with Open Graph. Here are five results handpicked by Facebook:

  • Vevo recently relaunched its site, as well as iPhone and Android apps with deep Facebook integration (see Vevo now requires Facebook). Since the Open Graph update, the music video platform has seen exponential growth: published actions on Facebook increased 600 percent from February to March, referrals from Facebook to Vevo have increased 130 percent in the same time frame, and 60 percent of Facebook referral traffic now comes from Open Graph stories. Vevo's move to a Facebook-only registration has resulted in an increase of 200 percent in daily registrations.
  • Viddy recently integrated its mobile app with Timeline to give people more ways to share the videos they're creating with friends. Since integrating with Timeline in February, Viddy has gone from 60,000 monthly active users to more than 920,000, and seen over 9,000,000 interactions with Viddy content on Facebook. Additionally, the startup has more than doubled its average daily sign-ups since integrating with Open Graph.
  • Izlesene launched with Open Graph in September 2011. Since then, the Turkish video site's number of monthly active users has grown from 250,000 to more than 6,500,000. By making it easy for people to add the videos they watch to their timeline, Izlesene has seen the number of videos people view per day increase three-fold.
  • Dailymotion, which integrated with Open Graph in January, makes it possible for people to add the videos they watch to their Timeline. In the past two months, more than 9 million people have added the app to their Timeline. On an average day, more than 6 million people visit the social video site from Facebook, and more than 2 million stories are published back to Facebook. Additionally, Facebook-connected users tend to be more engaged with the content on the site than non-connected users.

Facebook is already approving more types of Timeline apps, which will be launching soon. For additional details, check out the following resources for developers: Open Graph Checklist, Best Practices, and Tutorial.

Three month ago, Facebook started rolling out Timeline to all its users. This was a week after the company announced the new set of Open Graph apps from 60 new partners, which are designed to help you discover what your friends are currently doing, beyond the fact that they just Like something.

Menlo Park wants each user's activity, both online and offline, to be documented on their Facebook Timeline. These apps play a big part in that: adding an app means it will update your Timeline for you whenever you perform a given activity.
