Like his older brother Will, Ryan Powers took the prep-school route out of Jupiter Christian's football program. And just like Will's, Ryan's move paid off.
The younger Powers signed a football scholarship Wednesday to play for Stetson, a closer-to-home location compared to Will's Princeton. Powers spent this school year at Proctor (N.H.) Academy. He played fullback and safety this past fall, rushing for 1,130 yards and making 61 tackles. He was a first-team Post All-Area selection as a senior at Jupiter Christian in 2010.
Powers' dad, Bill, the head coach at Jupiter Christian, said Stetson is a "good academic school" with a beautiful campus that is close to home. Powers said his son should play right away.
Powers will join graduating American Heritage defensive end Mike Wallace at Stetson, a re-emerging FCS program that will start playing games in 2013 after disbanding its football team in 1956. Stetson will play in the Pioneer Football League.
