KUCHING: Three partners of a new cafe at Jalan Song here used their network of 'friends' in Facebook to promote the opening ceremony last Friday night to the extent that they ran out of chairs and tables to cater for the unexpectedly big crowd.
Their café, Borneo Ethnic, even has its own Facebook page to promote the itinerary for the night, which included free barbequed chicken, live music performances and special discounts for tattooing by an invited artist.
Tucked in a small corner lot behind Precinct 88 amid other shops, including a well-known coffeehouse chain outlet, the location did not distract the crowd from coming in, and many were standing around looking for place to sit after 8pm.
The proprietors had to borrow tables and chairs from a neighbouring coffeeshop to enable the crowd to witness the opening ceremony.
One of the cafe's partners, Matthew Abu, said the business was a joint venture between him and his relatives Albert Meuk and Alfred Dana.
"The cafe opened for business since March 10. We have the tagline for this cafe, which is 'Ruai Endar Berandau' (Enjoyable meet-up point). We play mostly Dayak music to give it a Borneo touch," said Matthew, also a radio deejay and marketing and event executive.
He added that the cafe would be opened from 5pm to 1am daily. The menu is mostly drinks and finger food including barbequed skewered meat.
The opening ceremony was officiated by Dayak Culture and Arts Promoters Association (PPSKD) chairman Mervyn Tajem.
In his brief speech, Mervyn congratulated the trio for their success in setting up the cafe and wished them the best.
He added that he was happy to see another business run by young Dayak men, and he urged others to give their moral support.
